In Response: Howard Dean will not challenge Phil Scott for governor in 2024
I want to express my sincere gratitude to Howard Dean for his exemplary service as a member of the House, Lieutenant Governor, and six-term Governor of Vermont. His unwavering dedication has positioned our brave little state at the forefront of advancing democracy, climate policy, and social equity.
Upon hearing the news of his decision not to run, I was repeatedly asked, "If not him, why you?" The House and Senate have spent years attempting to make Vermont more affordable, equitable, and climate-resilient, only to be met with an administration unwilling to compromise and eager to veto.
Over the past several years, I have been deeply involved in addressing these same issues for Vermonters. I served on the select board in Middlebury, was passionately elected to a second term, and currently serve as Co-Chair of the Vermont Commission on Women. In this role, I work daily to improve opportunities for the women of Vermont to flourish and thrive.
I am proud of the work I am doing, and I believe I have the lived and political experience needed to effectively serve my fellow Vermonters as their Governor. My goal is to unite the democratic supermajority and progressives while collaborating with Republicans to attend to all constituents.
Vermonters are grappling with new tax increases, a teaching shortage, and a lack of safe, affordable housing. Our childcare system—while moderately sufficient—needs improvement in access and affordability. Additionally, the climate crisis is flooding our streets and severely impacting our economy. As a result, working families, new residents, and lifelong Vermonters are finding it increasingly difficult to thrive here.
I am running because Vermont is at a crossroads. We can either continue to push struggling Vermonters out or work to protect their right to live and thrive here. Throughout my time in Vermont, I have been embraced by an amazing community and enjoyed the beautiful landscape while also experiencing the hardships that many Vermonters face. I am acutely aware of the necessity for real, effective solutions to these issues, having directly endured the consequences of their absence.
Much like Howard Dean’s former races, I am running a grassroots campaign that will engage Vermonters across the state. I will be campaigning in every county, working side by side with Vermonters who care deeply about the state's most pressing issues: education, affordability, and climate change.
I am a candidate unafraid to speak truth to power, committed to meeting Vermonters where they are, and dedicated to putting in the hard work. Together, we are poised to create a Vermont where everyone can flourish.
Thank you, Esther Charlestin
